These images are what we have decided to use for our CD Digipak.
We chose to use images of a city skyline and a council estate skyline to create a contrast between them. The council estate represents the artists current surroundings, in a neighbourhood facing recession. By using an image that holds connotations with current affairs, it creates a subject for the target audience to relate to before they've even heard the music.
The city skyline represents the artists aspirations of becoming a successful hip hop artist. By using visual representation of the artists hopes and dreams, without the over use of metaphors, it creates a link between artist and audience, as they feel they understand where he wishes to be in life. Once a connection is made between artist and audience, the audience are more likely to buy the records of the artists, hence taking him closer to his aspriations.
Also, by not including an image of our Artist, or any image related to typical rap conventions, the message is conveyed (Richard Dyer 1985) of mystery, similar to that of Jay-Z, but in a different way.
